Californians can now officially call June 20th International Surfing Day. The California Assembly approved House Resolution No. 30 this past Monday to make June 20th an annual summer surf holiday. In the spirit of this announcement, the Chief Executive of Surfrider Foundation, Jim Moriatry wrote an official “sick note” for Californians to use to take the day off work. Although it’s ultimately up to your boss to decide whether International Surfing Day is a legitimate excuse to take the day off and hit the beach, the official-looking note is worth a try.
International Surfing Day is not all fun and games. The day is primarily intended to “raise awareness about the need to protect our oceans, waves and beaches,” according to the Surfrider press release. In order to celebrate California’s rich history when it comes to surfing, there are numerous International Surf Day events taking place across the state. Surfing lessons for beginners and children, beach yoga, and beach cleanups are among some of the activities planned to celebrate this nifty holiday.
